How Can You Remove a Skin Tag

How Can You Remove a Skin Tag?

Skin tags are small, soft growths that hang off the skin which can vary in colour and size. They are very common, unharmful and unlikely to cause pain or discomfort, but it is possible to remove them if you wish to. Skin tags are usually found in the crevices of the skin such as on the neck, around the groin or under the breasts; however they can appear on other parts of the body too.

Skin tag or wart?

Skin tags are similar in appearance to warts, but there are a few key differences.

  • Skin tags are smooth and soft, whereas warts are rough with an irregular surface.
  • Skin tags are knobbly and hang off the skin – but warts are usually slightly raised or flat.
  • Skin tags are not contagious. Warts spread very easily so a sudden outbreak or cluster of growths is more likely to be warts.

What Causes Skin Tags?

Skin tags are made of loose collagen fibres and blood vessels surrounded by skin. Although skin tags are extremely common and can appear on any skin type, they are more likely to develop amongst certain groups of people.

  • Skin tags are more likely to occur in older people or people who have type 2 diabetes.
  • Pregnant women face a higher likelihood of developing skin tags due to changes in hormone levels.
  • Since skin tags usually grow in the skin folds, overweight people are more likely to be affected due to excess folds in the skin and skin chafing.

Skin Tag Removal

It is very important that you exercise extreme caution before trying a cheap, quick fix solution for removing skin tags. Many of the DIY methods that are recommended online are not guaranteed to work and come with some risks that you need to be aware of.

Skin tag removal bands and patches

A skin tag removal band cuts off the supply of blood to the base of the skin tag. The intended result is that without a supply of blood, the cells die, and the tag falls away. This process is known as ligation. Removal patches contain medication to treat the skin tag. If a person leaves a patch on a tag for several days or weeks, the tag may come off. Unfortunately these products do not always guarantee successful skin tag removal.

Removal creams

These products have been found to remove skin tags within 2-3 weeks. It is important to be aware that some of these creams may contain salicylic acid or tea tree oil which can irritate the skin or cause contact dermatitis.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil has been found to help to get rid of skin tags. People who try it apply a few drops of the oil to a cotton ball, which they affix to the skin tag with a bandage. They leave the cotton ball on the skin tag for 10 minutes, three times a day. It may take several days or weeks for the tag to fall off. If you decide to try this method, be sure to exercise extreme caution as tea tree oil can irritate your skin. Never apply tea tree oil to skin tags which reside in the eye area.

Apple cider vinegar

There is little research to show that apple cider vinegar is an effective solution for skin tags. If you use this method look out for skin irritation and stop using it if you notice any signs of reaction. Apple cider vinegar is very acidic and can cause chemical burns. Do not use it near the eyes. We do not recommend apple cider vinegar as a solution for skin tags due to the risks involved. You should always speak to a medical professional before trying any home remedies.

Cutting or clipping

While it may be tempting to cut or clip off a skin tag at home for instant gratification there is some serious risk involved. This can be a very painful method and if not using thoroughly sanitised tools infection is likely to occur. Cutting or clipping skin tags can also cause heavy bleeding as it can be easy to inadvertently nick a blood vessel or vein. Do not under any circumstances try this method!
