It has long been noted that our mood and how we feel has an effect on our skin. For example when we are sick or feeling rundown your skin generally suffers. It may look tired, dull and may also feel dry or tight.
What about Stress?
Stress doesn’t directly cause acne or breakouts, but it does act as a TRIGGER for the factors that contribute to acne development eg Oil secretions.
Stress is triggered by many different things (individual to the person) however considering the current situation as a country we find ourselves in as a clinic we have definitely seen a increase in breakouts among our clients and even personally myself.
This constant, continued and heightened level of stress sends adrenal glands into overdrive. Adrenal glands are in charge of regulating stress, and when stressful situations arise, adrenal glands stimulate sebaceous (oil) glands to secrete more sebum (oil). This excess oil sets the stage for acne development.
Stress also causes increased blood flow and expansion of capillaries, which makes skin appear more red and inflamed. Stress can also cause poor absorption of nutrients in the diet and can lead to slower healing because of a lowered immune system.
Do not underestimate the power that stress has on your skin.
