Despite how common acne is, it is a skin condition that is still largely misunderstood by many people. While acne is often thought of as a teenage issue, it can also continue into adulthood, with around 95% of people between the ages of 11 and 30 dealing with acne at some point in their lives.
The number of acne sufferers is continuing to rise globally, and so, effective treatments are more important now than ever before. Everyone’s skin is unique, which is why we offer a range of consultations and bespoke treatments at The Skin Health Clinic to get to the root of your personal skin issues.
Acne doesn’t only affect the skin, it can also have a huge impact on a person’s mental health and self esteem. We see these effects first hand and through consultation and treatment we strive to restore our clients confidence and positive self-image.
What is Acne?
Over a third of adults in the UK have suffered from acne at some point in their lives, while over 10% of adults are still suffering with it. It can manifest itself in different ways depending on the severity of the case, ranging from blackheads to cysts. While mild cases might show up as a few clogged pores or small pimples, more severe acne can cause painful, inflamed breakouts deep under the skin. It is most likely to appear on the face however, many people with acne also experience it on their back and chest areas. Understanding what type of acne you’re experiencing is the first step toward finding the right treatment.
What Causes Acne?
Acne is caused when hair follicles become blocked by dead skin cells and a change in the amount or quality of an oily substance called sebum. The most common trigger of acne is changes in hormone levels, specifically during puberty (NHS), however, acne can also appear in adults. Particular hormones cause the oil glands in the skin to produce too much oil, which changes the behavior of a usually harmless skin bacteria called c. acnes. This causes inflammation and leads to the symptoms of acne (NHS).
Both internal and external factors can also contribute to the development of acne. These include diet, medication, the sun, picking your skin and your environment. If other people in your family have suffered from acne, it’s also more likely that you could develop it.
How Can We Help at The Skin Health Clinic?
At The Skin Health Clinic, we pride ourselves in delivering treatments which acne-prone skin will benefit from. The different options for treating acne are dependent on the level of severity.
We work with each of our clients individually to personalise a treatment plan and ensure our approach is effective for their skin type. We take a Corneotherapy approach to skin care, treating the skin from the outside-in by focusing on strengthening the skin barrier through our bespoke Skin Health treatments. When the barrier is compromised, the skin can’t perform its vital functions.
One of our treatments that acne-prone skin can benefit from is microneedling. Microneedling is effective in repairing the skin and supporting new collagen growth, forming new skin cells. The amount of microneedling sessions you will need will depend on your goals, however, normally 3-6 sessions is ideal for optimal results.
We also offer LED Light Therapy which can be helpful. Our LED Light Therapy treatment utilises a medical grade device that maximises skin function and cell rejuvenation. The benefits of LED Light Therapy treatments include reducing spots, breakouts and inflammation, ideal for anyone with acne prone skin! Our LED Treatment is quick, lasting only 30 minutes, but still gives spectacular results.
At The Skin Health Clinic, we understand that skin care shouldn’t take a one-size-fits-all approach, recognising that different skin has different needs. Our Corneotherapy approach focuses on repairing and maintaining the skin’s natural barrier, rather than just treating symptoms. The expertise at The Skin Health Clinic allows us to create bespoke skin care for our clients which is customised specifically to their skin. This will allow them to get the most out of our products and see the most effective results.
